This is a little informational post.

My goal is to explain how I plan to use icons in my posts, so that it’s clear what they mean.

My goal is to attach icons such as and to the front of shortcuts, so preload the viewer on what that link is going to take them to.

If the link, for example, is to a file on a git repo, and that repo is primary nix, then the combination will probably be .

When the hoster specifically is what is important to know, I might use instead, but if the host is not importamt, then I’ll opt for the generic logo.

When the focus should primarily be on the Readme, I’ll use instead of the logo.

There’s not going to be a hard and fast rule, of course, but I’ll try to stay consistent. There’s going to be a lot of room for nuance here.

A couple of examples:

A snippet of Code in a Git Repo
A blog post about NixOS
A readme on a Git Repo, but it’s about C#, not Nix
A contrived post about NixOS and C# on a ReadMe on Git where the identity of the host is not important. Also, I’ll strive to never use more than 2 icons.
A news post about GitHub, on GitHub
A news post about NixOS, on nixos.org

Basically, I’m trying to set expectations for the person opening the link.

Thanks for Reading!
